We have seen questions come up about dahlia that had accidently been rooted under natural (short) days and plants had started to form tubers. What can you do about this? Do not worry about the tubers – remember in the old days dahlia were all grown from over-wintered tubers. As long as you have at least 10 weeks to ship to ship the crop, then you can promote vegetative growth again and flower the plants normally – although the plants will be branched as the flower bud will need to be pinched out. Plants should be more or less vegetative in about 3 weeks.

To reverse the tuber and reproductive growth, please use the following guideline:

- Pinch out the flower bud so vegetative lateral shoots can develop;

- Place under long days – either a 16-hr day via day extension or a 4-hr night interruption;

- Place in a warm location with night temperatures at least 70°F to 73°F;

- Spray with Florel at 200 ppm.

To flower, reduce the day length to 13 to 14 hours and reduce temperatures to less than 70°F. Don’t apply Florel anymore. At an Average Day Temperature of 65°F to 68°F, the plants should flower in about 6 to 7 weeks.
